TACLOBAN CITY – The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Eastern Visayas on Wednesday turned over 33 new patrol jeeps and 300 basic assault rifles to boost law enforcement in the region.

Of the 33 new patrol vehicles worth PHP36.96 million, eight units were distributed to the police provincial office in Leyte, seven in Biliran, six in Northern Samar, five in Southern Leyte, four in Eastern Samar, and three in Samar.

The PNP also handed over PHP14.09 million worth of new 5.56 basic assault firearms to six police provincial offices and seven city police offices in the region.

PNP regional director Brig. Gen. Ronaldo De Jesus said the procurement of mobility assets and weapons aligns with the PNP Capability Enhancement Program 2020 to enhance the operational readiness of the personnel and upgrade the law enforcement approach.

“Apart from acknowledging this welcome development, we also convey our gratitude to the leadership efforts of this current administration. The support and trust given to the police force in Eastern Visayas, as reflected by the provision of these vehicles and firearms, gives us the opportunity to be one step ahead against our enemies involved in illegal drugs, criminality, and insurgency,” De Jesus said during the turnover ceremony at the regional headquarters.

De Jesus asked recipients of the new equipment to properly care for and maintain the vehicles and firearms to help ensure peace and order in their areas. (PNA)
