DAVAO CITY – Following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Davao Occidental and other parts of Mindanao on Thursday night, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs) said there is no destructive tsunami threat.
At around 8:23 p.m., a 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Jose Abad Santos. Davao Occidental.
Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the tremblor in the town of Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental with a depth of 116 kilometers
Based on the earthquake advisory of Phivolcs, Intensity 5 was also felt in General Santos City, Intensity 4 in Davao City, and Intensity 2 in Bislig, Surigao del Sur.
Instrumental intensities were also felt in various provinces in Mindanao – Intensity 5 (Kiamba, Sarangani), Intensity 4 (Alabel, Sarangani, Koronadal City, and South Cotabato).
Intensity 3 (Kidapawan City, Bislig, Surigao del Sur, Gingoog City, and Misamis Oriental), Intensity 2 (Cagayan de Oro City, Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, Borongan City, Eastern Samar), and Intensity 1 (Catbalogan City, Samar).
Meanwhile, Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental Mayor Jason John Joyce, in a Facebook post, said people in his town are safe and there is no major damage on the town's major structures.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar, in a Facebook post, said teams from DPWH were deployed to assess structural integrity, damages to key infrastructure in Davao Occidental. (PNA)
