MANILA – Water level of Angat Dam in Region III (Central Luzon) may continue to rise this weekend but not to the extent of having to conduct spilling operation.
Angat water rose by 1.59 meters on Jan. 21 due to rain from tail-end of a frontal system (TEFS), noted Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hydrologist Edgar dela Cruz.
He said TESF rain is easing so water flowing into Angat is diminishing.
"That indicates rise in Angat water this weekend can be much less," he said.
Such rise will unlikely bring Angat's water to levels that will already require resumption of spilling operation, he noted.
According to PAGASA, Angat Dam terminated its last spilling operation on Dec. 29 last year.
Angat Dam undertakes such operation to help preserve its structural integrity.
In its daily weather forecast on Friday, PAGASA said TEFS is affecting eastern sections of northern Luzon and Region III.
Heavy rainfall is unlikely in Region III this weekend, noted PAGASA weather forecaster Ana Clauren.
But she said Region III can expect localized thunderstorms mostly during afternoons.
PAGASA reported Angat Dam's 6 a.m. water level on Friday at 213.42 meters -- 0.57 meters higher than what it was 24 hours earlier.
Such water level rise is already less than what Angat registered on Thursday (Jan. 21), noted dela Cruz.
"Water level rise there will likely be a lot lesser as weather in Region III improves so there's low possibility for Angat to resume spilling or releasing excess water this weekend," he said. (PNA)
