36 candidates shortlisted for 6 Court of Appeals vacancies

MANILA – The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Wednesday submitted to Malacañang the list of 36 candidates for vacancies in the Court of Appeals.

Among the names submitted were Quezon City Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes who in 2019 convicted members of the Ampatuan clan and their men who were the accused in the Maguindanao massacre case, the worst peacetime incident of deaths involving newsmen in the world.

Also on the list are Makati executive judge Selma Palacio Alaras and Muntinlupa Judge Philip A. Aguinaldo.

The 36 nominees are for six vacancies in the CA arising from the appointment of four justices to the high court, namely justices Rodil V. Zalameda, Mario V. Lopez, Edgrdo Delos Santos, and Samuel Gaerlan and the retirement of justices Ma. Luisa Quijano-Padilla and Jane Aurora Lantion.

Aside from Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta sitting as ex-officio chairperson, other members of the JBC include Justice Secretary Menardo L. Guevarra, Rep. Vicente S. Veloso III, retired Supreme Court justices Jose Mendoza and Noel Tijam, Toribio E. Ilao, and Franklin J. Monteverde.

The JBC also announced applicants to vacancies in the Sandiganbayan and the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA). (PNA)
