BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Evelio Leonardia on Wednesday expressed optimism in bringing Bacolod towards its goal of becoming a “smart city” with the arrival of another telecommunications service provider this year.

On Tuesday, Leonardia met Converge ICT Solution founder and chief executive officer Dennis Anthony Uy during a courtesy call at the Bacolod Government Center.

He said Uy presented his company’s plans to him and the city government executives, revealing that Converge plans to roll out fast fiber internet service for homes and businesses in the city in the third quarter of the year.

“This is a major development towards our goal in making Bacolod a ‘smart city’ because an enhanced telecommunications infrastructure will boost our connectivity to the rest of the world,” Leonardia said in a statement.

Converge operates fiber-optic broadband networks, cable television, and cable internet in the country.

During the meeting, Leonardia presented the city’s condition and performance, including its best practices and strategies in handling the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, to balance lives and livelihood as well as the multi-billion investments in Bacolod just before the global health crisis.

“As the city slowly rises from the effects of the pandemic, we expect that the administration’s multimillion flagship projects will jump-start the city’s economy,” he added.

He said Uy committed to supporting the distance learning program of the Department of Education, and the children of informal settlers who were either evicted or victims of natural calamities.

"He also wants to be a major sponsor of the MassKara Festival once the pandemic is over," Leonardia added. (PNA)
