MANILA - Philippine basketball legend Robert Jaworski is currently recovering from pneumonia after fighting the sickness last year, according to his family.

The Jaworskis confirmed on Friday that their 75-year-old patriarch, who last week was named into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame, contracted pneumonia, but they clarified that it has nothing to do with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

"Last year, he was hospitalized due to a bout with pneumonia. He, however, tested negative for Covid-19," the family said in a statement.

They said the former senator was diagnosed with "a non-life-threatening blood abnormality" that makes it hard for him to return to his full healthy state. The family added that he is feeling better now.

"He is making good progress and is slowly moving forward," the statement further read.

They thanked all the fans, who followed Jaworski's stellar basketball career from his collegiate days at the University of the East to the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association with Meralco and to the Philippine Basketball Association with Toyota and Ginebra, for the greetings, tributes, and well-wishes.

"Natuwa at napaligaya po ninyo ang aming ama (You made our father happy and joyful)," the Jaworski family continued.

"At this time of recuperation, our family would like to request for your well-wishes and prayers for our beloved father." (PNA)
