LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu - A resident of this city will attempt to swim full circle around Mactan Island on April 24, 2021 in line with the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan.

Mayor Junard Chan said on Saturday open water swimmer Cleevan Alegres, a resident of Barangay Maribago, will swim the entire 42-kilometer stretch around the island for an estimated 18 hours.

Chan said Alegres will be the first to try such a feat.

But before circumnavigating Mactan Island, Alegres will first attempt to swim around the smaller Olango Island, a separated islet east of Mactan on April 4, Chan said.

“This will be a 19-kilometer to 21-kilometer swim,” the mayor said in a Facebook post.

Chan called for support for Alegres, who will make a “historic swim” around Mactan.

“We welcome this attempt because this is a manifestation of our recognition to our hero Lapu-Lapu,” he said in Cebuano. (PNA)
