ZAMBOANGA CITY--The Philippine Statistics Authority-9 (PSA-9) has registered 132,635 individuals in its Step 1 registration of the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) since January in this city.

Conrad Sontillano, PSA-9 chief statistical specialist, said Monday the registrants belong to the low-income households in the 34 of this city’s 98 barangays.

Sontillano said the house-to-house Step 1 registration ends on March 31, and the other modes of registration would be announced later.

Step 1 registration involves gathering data such as name, sex, date, place of birth, blood type, address, Filipino or alien, marital status, and email address.

Step 2 include the gathering of photographs, iris scan, and fingerprints. Step 3, which is the final step, is the issuance of PhilSys number and Identification Cards.

The PSA-9 employed 35 data collectors in this city.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law Republic Act 11055, known as the Philippine Identification System Act, establishing a single national identification system that aims to provide a valid proof of identity for Filipinos.

The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA)
