BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Benjamin Magalong has announced that he has contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

"It is with a sad note that I would like to inform everyone that as of my RT-PCR (reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction) test conducted yesterday morning (April 2), to which my results came out at 4:30 p.m. of the same day, I was tested positive of the Covid-19 virus," he said in a public announcement released by the city government on its official social media account on Saturday.

Magalong, who is also the country's contact tracing czar, said efforts are being done to find those with whom he came into close contact.

He also advised everybody to observe the minimum health standards.

"Indeed, this news came out as a devastating blow for me and my family," he said. “The seriousness of this pandemic is something that we should not take for granted."

Magalong's positive test result came on the same day the city government recorded the highest single-day record with 221 positive Covid-19 cases. (PNA
