MANILA – Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar on Monday extended his condolences over the passing of former press secretary and veteran journalist Crispulo Julio “Jun” Icban Jr.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones, friends, and colleagues of former Press Secretary and veteran journalist Crispulo Julio ‘Jun’ Icban, Jr. for his passing,” Andanar said in a press statement issued late Monday night.
Icban, 85, died on Monday, according to a Facebook post by the local newspaper Manila Bulletin. His cause of death was not mentioned.
Icban served as the newspaper's editor-in-chief for the last 18 years and was named concurrent publisher in 2020.
Andanar hailed Icban’s role in the development of Philippine journalism.
“Rendering 47 years in Manila Bulletin, 18 years of which were spent as its editor-in-chief, his works and presence have been a daily part of the lives of those in the industry and those who consume news and information,” he said.
Andanar said Icban will always be remembered for his contribution to the news industry.
“As someone who has had a distinguished career in and has devoted his life to journalism, Mr. Icban will be truly missed, especially by those who have been cultivated with his vocation. We pray for the eternal repose of his soul,” he said.
Icban graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines in 1954, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
He started his career in journalism when he joined the Manila Times in 1954.
Icban was also named press secretary under the term of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2010. (PNA)
