MANILA – A Catholic prelate on Wednesday urged Filipinos to put faith into action by helping those in need amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
“Let us proclaim what faith does to us. Let us celebrate this gift by sharing it with others especially with those on the brink of hopelessness and helplessness,” Fr. Jerome Secillano, parish priest of the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Parish in Sampaloc, Manila said in a Facebook post.
This as the Philippines and other countries battle a surge in Covid-19 cases and global vaccine supply woes.
“But, wouldn't it be more reasonable for us to turn to faith just when science and medicine have also struggled to combat this dreaded virus? I do not like spiritualizing our problems just as easily as I propose. But at the rate things are going, we truly need an enormous amount of faith to survive this crisis,” he added.
He said the people have to admit that there are things that are beyond their control and that they can only turn to God for refuge.
“These are inevitable realities that human power cannot simply overcome. If so, then this is the most opportune time to call on GOD, who has power over everything,” he said, adding that faith has the ability to "heal, give life and moves mountains".
Secillano, meanwhile, admitted that pandemic has overshadowed the celebration of the 500 Years of Christianity in the country.
“The pandemic has slowly overshadowed the celebration of 500 Years of Christianity (YOC) in the country. The joy of receiving the faith has almost turned into a grave concern on how to overcome Covid-19 in our midst,” he said.
