ILOILO CITY – Cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in this region are starting to spike with 264 new confirmed infections based on a report released by the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) on Wednesday.
The new positives raised the total cumulative cases of the region to 28,638 with 25,618 recoveries and 795 deaths.
Of the 264 new cases, Negros Occidental recorded the highest with 89, followed by Bacolod City and Antique with 50 cases each, Aklan with 32, Iloilo province has 30, Iloilo City with 10, Capiz has two, and Guimaras with one case.
In the previous online Isyung Bakuna episode of the DOH WV, Dr. Mary Jane Roches Juanico, head of the infectious disease section, said the region in the past months has maintained around 50 to 60 cases a day.
The cases increased to roughly 80 infections starting March 21, following the surge in the number of positives in August and September to around 200 per day.
In the same virtual program, she said that Aklan, Antique, Guimaras, Iloilo have increased cases in March.
She attributed the increase to gatherings and cockfighting.
Juanico said that amid the suspension of inbound trips from the National Capital Region (NCR) Plus areas, there should be no room for complacency, especially in places with moderate and high cases in the region.
Further, public and private hospitals and local government units are encouraged to review their surge capacity preparedness to make sure that there are available critical care beds.
She added that regardless of the cause of the increase, the “clinical management of Covid-19 remains the same”.
The medical doctor added that DOH also would like to emphasize the effective implementation of the Prevent-Detect-Isolate-Treatment-Reintegration (DITR) strategy. (PNA)
