MANILA – Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Friday paid tribute to the heroism of Filipino front-liners in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic as the country commemorates "Araw ng Kagitingan" (Day of Valor).
This, as he lauded the sacrifices, bravery, and love of country shown by Filipino veterans of World War II and other heroes through the years.
"Sa kabila ng ating mga kinakaharap na pagsubok bilang isang bansa, walang pasubali ang kagitingan na ating nasasaksihan mula sa ating mga kababayan na katuwang natin sa paglaban sa kasakuluyang pandemya (Despite the many trials being experienced by our nation, there is no stop to the bravery being exhibited by our fellow Filipinos in the ongoing fight against the pandemic)," Lorenzana said in a statement.
He also thanked medical workers who continue to safeguard the nation's health, soldiers and other government workers who continue to look after the safety of fellow Filipinos and help those in need despite challenges.
"Saludo kami sa inyo (We salute you all)," he added.
Under-equipped and meagerly supplied American and Filipino forces, fighting in the Bataan front-lines, were forced to surrender on April 9, 1942, after 93 days of gallant resistance against the superior Japanese force.
Some 60,000 Filipino and American troops were made prisoners of war by the Japanese.
They were made to walk some 140 kilometers from Mariveles, Bataan to Capas, Tarlac on hot days with no food and water in what was known in the world as the “Death March”. (PNA)
