DAVAO CITY – Up to 100,000 individuals have already registered for Step 2 of the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) in Davao City and Davao del Sur as of March 31, data from the Philippines Statistics Office (PSA) in Davao del Sur showed.

PSA-Davao del Sur data showed that at least 82,680 residents have already completed the Step 2 registration in Davao City alone. In the province's municipalities, Bansalan had 4,974 registrants, 293 in Hagonoy, 3,522 in Magsaysay, 3,021 in Matanao, and 5,274 in Sta. Cruz.

The agency said the numbers are expected to increase as more teams submit their daily monitoring results.

PSA said the PhilID – unlike most government-issued IDs – seeks to promote inclusivity and better service delivery.

“The digital ID or PhilID is free for all Filipino citizens and is valid until death,” PSA said on its website, even as it noted that having a single ID would be economical because it frees the people from spending for renewals.

“PhilID will protect Filipinos from identity theft and other scams of the same nature with the application of biometric capturing and tokenization of the ID number,” PSA added.

Dong Edong, an overseas Filipino worker  (OFW) based in Saudi Arabia, noted that PhilID is safe and “incorruptible” that should fully ensure the holder's protection.

“I hope that information will be streamlined with the banks, LTO/LTFRB registrations, and all government agencies, SIM card registration, and other entities. An incorruptible/secured main database is needed for this to work just like here in KSA,” Edong said in a recent Facebook post.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA)
