MANILA – A total of 1.580 million people have registered as voters from January until the second week of April, an official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Thursday.
Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said women comprise the majority of the registrants.
“Voter registration update: Jan. 4, 2021 to Apr.15, 2021 total 1,588,432 (Male 737,890 Female 850,542). More women registered,” she said in a Twitter post. “We have 58,222,176 voters as of January 21, 2021. More women voters than men.”
The voter registration is still suspended in National Capital Region (NCR) Plus and other areas that are under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) or enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) until April 30.
These include Metro Manila, the provinces of Abra, Quirino Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, and the city of Santiago in Isabela.
Meanwhile, voter registration is ongoing in other areas in the country that are under general community quarantine (GCQ) or modified general community quarantine (MGCQ).
All Offices of Election Officers (OECs) in cities and municipalities are ready to accept applications for voter registration from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays.
The Comelec is looking to register some 4 million new voters for the next year's national and local elections.
The nationwide voter registration resumed on September 1, 2020, and will run until September 30, 2021. (PNA)
