LEGAZPI CITY – A private tertiary school here was ordered closed on Wednesday after a coronavirus disease (Covid-19) case was recorded in the establishment.

This, as Bicol logged 166 new Covid-19 cases on April 21, the highest recorded since the onset of the pandemic last year, a bulletin from the Department of Health (DOH) office in the region on Thursday showed.

In an interview on Thursday, Mayor Noel Rosal said the Computer Arts Technologies (CAT) College on Balintawak St. in Barangay Ilawod has been locked to give way for disinfection.

“To maximize the implementation of Covid-19 risk management measures and based on the assessment of the situation, the temporary lockdown will take effect Wednesday to give sufficient time for disinfection of the entire building and its premises and completion of contact tracing and testing,” he said.

Rosal also said the office shall resume its services once the contact tracing and testing are fully completed.

Meanwhile, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) regional and Albay provincial office shall be closed starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 23, for disinfection.

An advisory from the agency encouraged online transactions.

“You may send in your queries and concerns via our FB page TESDA V or thru our email addresses, [email protected] and [email protected]. Office transaction will resume on Monday,” it said.

The DOH said there are 1,290 active cases in the region, of whom 25 are either severe or critical and admitted in hospitals, while the rest are either with mild symptoms or asymptomatic and in quarantine facilities.

Of the 166 new cases, 11 were admitted to the hospital while 155 were isolated.

Camarines Sur has the highest number of cases with 100; Camarines Norte has 17; Albay, 23; Sorsogon, 22; and four transient cases from Taguig City (2), and once each from Manila and Quezon City.

The DOH tracker has logged 6,952 cumulative cases in Bicol since March last year, with close to 5,300 recoveries and over 200 recorded deaths. (PNA)
