MANILA – Military filed units are instructed to support community pantry initiatives and any other humanitarian efforts aimed to mitigate the effects of Covid-19.

"The AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines), through its Chief of Staff General Cirilito Sobejana, has issued a directive to field units to support and help to make happen any and all humanitarian endeavors similar to the community pantry – or by any names they are called – where these are happening in their respective areas of responsibility," AFP spokesperson, Marine Maj.Gen. Edgard Arevalo said in a statement Thursday.

In line with Sobejana's directives, the AFP Civil Relations under Joint Task Force National Capital Region has unloaded sacks of vegetables in community pantries in 10 locations in Quezon City.

Arevalo said these are in Maginhawa, C.P. Garcia, Project 4,  Mahinhin (near Kalayaan), Luzon Avenue, Visayas Avenue, Kamuning, Barangay Bagong Pag Asa, Kamias Road,  and Roces in Scout Tuazon.

He added that distributions will continue  Friday.

"Where there are none, AFP unit commanders should initiate and coordinate for the putting up of one. These projects will alleviate the condition of our poor kababayan’s adversely affected by the pandemic," Arevalo said.

Sobejana also announced that he intends to convince AFP personnel to donate their salaries for a day to help fund the projects, he added.

Arevalo called the proposal a "humanitarian act" which AFP has been doing many times in the past during human-induced calamities like the Battle of Marawi and natural calamities like the Taal Volcano eruption. (PNA)
