CEBU CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Central Visayas (BFAR-7) on Tuesday said it has turned over PHP601,000 worth of fishery projects to the Cebu provincial government that will benefit several fisherfolk from the four towns in Camotes Islands, Cebu.
BFAR-7’s assistance to the northeastern islands off the Cebu mainland came in time for the Farmers and Fisherfolk Month observance this month.
In a statement, BFAR-7 regional director Allan Poquita said the municipality of San Francisco will be getting five units of motorized fiberglass reinforced plastic boats worth PHP240,225.
The bureau will also provide the municipality of Poro with two units of motorized fiberglass reinforced plastic boats; and two units of fish aggregating devices locally known as "payao" worth PHP144,302.
Tudela town will be receiving two units of motorized fiberglass reinforced plastic boats worth PHP96,102.
Five units of payao worth PHP120,500 will also be given to Pilar town.
Moreover, Poquita said the bureau has also pledged to provide PHP70,450 worth of post-harvest equipment to the Cebu Technological University’s Camotes campus.
The set of equipment comprises an upright freezer, pressure cooker, and processing utensils.
“These livelihood projects are earmarked under BFAR's Targeted Actions to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation (TARGET) program, which seeks to assist marginal fishermen and improve their livelihood and income,” he said. (PNA)
