MANILA – Parts of Samar are now under tropical cyclone wind signal (TCWS) No. 1 as Tropical Storm (TS) Dante maintains its strength, the weather bureau said Monday afternoon.

"Dante" was last seen 375 kilometers east northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, or 455 km east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, moving northwestward at 20 km per hour.

It packs maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center, and gustiness up to 90 kph.

TCWS No. 1 has been hoisted over the eastern portion of Northern Samar (Mapanas, Gamay, Lapinig, Palapag, Laoang) and the northeastern portion of Eastern Samar (Arteche, San Policarpo).

The TCWS was hoisted in anticipation of the strong winds caused by "Dante", the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Strong winds may prevail in those areas within 36 hours, it added.

Meanwhile, light to moderate, with at times heavy rains will be experienced over Caraga, Davao Region, Eastern Visayas, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental.

Isolated to scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas highly susceptible to these hazards.

Nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall due to surface runoff of river channels, according to PAGASA.

Moderate to rough seas will prevail over the eastern seaboards of the Visayas and Mindanao.

PAGASA advised mariners of small seacraft to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea. (PNA)
