MANILA – Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar has extended a helping hand to residents of Port Area in Manila who were left homeless due to a recent fire that hit the area.

Villar, through his family’s Villar Sipag Foundation, donated about 1,000 bags of grocery items for families affected by the fire last May 26.

The foundation turned over 40 boxes of goods to Barangay 650 chairperson Salik Arongo on Monday for distribution to the affected families.

"With houses made of light materials gutted leaving a thousand families homeless, the best thing to do to support communities who suffer from disaster is to show Filipino compassion and help however we can that would give them peace of mind having something to eat," he said in a news release on Tuesday.

The DPWH Central Office is just around 800 meters away from the affected area.

The fire left one dead and destroyed the houses of hundreds of families along 11th Street Railroad Drive which is located just behind the Philippine Red Cross office. (PR)
