TACLOBAN CITY – Flooding has affected 17 villages in Maasin City, Southern Leyte and some parts of Leyte province after Tropical Storm Dante dumped heavy rains in some parts of the Eastern Visayas region.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported on Wednesday that rivers and stream have overflowed in 11 villages in Maasin City, the capital of Southern Leyte province. Other flood-hit areas are three villages in Ormoc City, two villages in Bato, and a village in Matalom, all in Leyte province.
“We have also received reports of power interruption in several parts of three Samar provinces due to fierce winds brought by the tropical storm,” OCD-Eastern Visayas regional director Lord Byron Torrecarion said in a phone interview.
In Eastern Samar, a landslide in Taft town on Tuesday morning closed a road section of a major highway that links the provinces of Samar and Eastern Samar. Clearing has continued until Wednesday morning.
There is an ongoing coordination with provincial disaster and risk reduction management office on damages and needs, according to Torrecarion.
The OCD initially distributed 100 hygiene kits and food packs to severely affected families in Maasin City in response to the request of the local government.
All of the six provinces in Eastern Visayas were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 when “Dante” unleashed its wrath in the region on Tuesday. (PNA)
