BUTUAN CITY – One person reportedly died due to accidental drowning during the height of the onslaught of Tropical Storm Dante in the province of Dinagat Islands on June 2.
This, according to a report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), posted on the Facebook page of the Information Office of Dinagat Islands on Thursday.
Dinagat Islands PDRRMO chief Rosario JRA R. Alon identified the fatality as Elpedo Honghong, 69, a resident of Purok 1, Barangay Edena in Basilisa town.
The typhoon also caused partial damage to a house in Basilisa and injured one unnamed person.
A total of 236 families or 702 individuals were also evacuated for safety due to floods caused by “Dante” in the area.
The evacuees came from the 12 barangays in the towns of Basilisa, Dinagat, and Libjo, the PDRRMO report said.
The affected families were temporarily sheltered in 12 evacuation centers and were provided with food and other necessary needs.
“In preparation for TS Dante, the respective Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (MDRRMOs) in the province were able to activate their Emergency Operations Centers, conducted inventories of response resources, disseminated information in barangay levels and issued early warning and advisories to residents,” the report said.
It added that MDRRMOs also made monitoring in all areas identified as high risk to floods and landslides. (PNA)
