BUTUAN CITY – No damages were reported after three earthquakes that hit off the coasts of the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur Sunday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit 72 kilometers northeast off the coast of Burgos town in Surigao del Norte at 11:20 a.m. Sunday.

Intensity III was also felt in the towns of Dapa and Gen. Luna in Surigao del Norte and Intensity II in Surigao City and in the towns of Abuyog and Palo in Leyte.

The magnitude 5.8 quake has a depth of 10 kilometers and tectonic in origin, Phivolcs said.

At 10:59 a.m. Sunday, Phivolcs also recorded a magnitude 5.2 quake that hit 97 km. northeast off the coast of Burgos town.

Intensity II quakes were also felt in Surigao City and in the town of Abuyog in Leyte.

Roberto Parada of the information office of Surigao del Norte told Philippine News Agency Sunday that no damages were reported so far in the affected areas of Burgos, Dapa, Gen. Luna, and Surigao City.

“We called the office of Rep. Francisco Jose Matugas of the first district of Surigao del Norte in Siargao Island for an assessment on the possible damages of the earthquake. So far, there were no damages reported by the office as of this time,” Parada said.

The towns of Burgos, Dapa and Gen. Luna are situated in Siargao Island, known as the surfing capital of the Philippines.

Parada said the local government units (LGUs) in the area are still conducting assessments on the possible impacts of the tremor.

Meanwhile, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake also hit 56 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur around 4:28 a.m. Sunday with a depth of 22 kilometers and tectonic in origin.

Phivolcs said an Intensity III earthquake was also felt in Bislig City, also in Surigao del Sur.

Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office director, Col. James T. Goforth on Sunday said he immediately ordered the local police stations in the area to make assessments on the possible impacts of the quake.

“There were no damages, so far, recorded in Hinatuan and Bislig City based on the reports of our local police stations,” Goforth said.

He added that concerned police stations were also ordered to continue their coordination with the LGUs to further assess the impacts of the tremor. (PNA)
