MANILA – A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit Davao Occidental on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The tectonic quake struck 68 kilometers southeast of the municipality Jose Abad Santos at 10:42 a.m. It had a depth of 61 kms.
Intensity III was felt in Malungon, Sarangani; Intensity II in General Santos City; Malita, Davao Occidental; Alabel and Kiamba, Sarangani.
Intensity I, on the other hand, was felt in Tupi, South Cotabato.
Phivolcs also reported the following intensities:
Intensity II - General Santos City; Kiamba, Sarangani
Intensity I - Koronadal City, South Cotabato
Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports by people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensity is measured using intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.
Phivolcs said aftershocks are possible, while damage to infrastructures is not expected from the magnitude 5.1 earthquake.
Meanwhile, the second quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill was scheduled on June 10.
It was live streamed via the Civil Defense PH and NDRRMC's Facebook pages.
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr. earlier urged the public to join in the drills.
Safe place, safe construction, and safe community are the three things that the public needs to remember when it comes to earthquake preparedness, he said.
"People need to help themselves as help from others will not arrive right away during large-scale earthquakes," Solidum said. (PNA)
