ILOILO CITY - The local government here will ask the national Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) to extend its modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) classification until the end of this month.

In an advisory released on Friday, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said that the request for the extension was based on the recommendation of the city's Covid Team amid the rising cases in the metropolis.

He said that since May 26, the city has recorded over 100 new cases a day.

On June 10 alone, the city has recorded 171 confirmed cases composed of 114 local transmissions, 32 index cases (not included among those who were located through contract tracing), and 25 additional employees of the city hall.

“The MECQ, which limits movements seeks to slow down the spread of Covid-19. Hospitals have reached their capacities and several patients are already on a waiting list. Quarantine facilities are also getting full,” Treñas said.

In the advisory, he added that the city government has already requested additional vaccines to fast-track the inoculation process in the city.

As of June 10, the city government reported that 41,491 doses have been administered to residents since its rollout in March.

Some 8,296 are already fully vaccinated while 33,195 are waiting for their second dose.

Additional nurses and nursing aides have been hired to augment health personnel requirements while uniformed personnel were already deployed in hospitals to augment their manpower.

The city was first placed under MECQ on May 23 until 31 and was extended until June 15.

Data from the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) showed that as of June 10, Iloilo City has registered 8,949 cumulative cases with 2,296 active cases. It also has 6,427 recoveries and 223 deaths. (PNA)
