MANILA – The participating athletes in the 2021 Hanoi Southeast Asian (SEA) Games will have to wait for at least two more weeks as the SEA Games Federation agreed not to vote again for the proposed postponement of the biennial meet.

According to tweets from the Olympic Council of Malaysia on Thursday, the Vietnamese Olympic Committee (VOC) proposed a two-week monitoring period regarding the current coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) situation in Hanoi and its suburbs before it can make another recommendation about the SEA Games fate, which the other national Olympic committees (NOC's) present agreed upon.

The SEA Games Federation might ultimately decide on the postponement of the 2021 edition from Nov. 21-Dec. 2 in its next meeting on July 8.

During its June 9 meeting, the VOC proposed the postponement of the SEA Games to 2022 but was met with huge objection from eight other NOC's including the Philippines.

The rise of Covid-19 cases in Vietnam slowed down a bit on Wednesday as only 207 people have been added to the number of infected patients in the country, bringing the seven-day average rise down to 314 from a high of 378 on Monday.

Vietnam now has a total of 13,989 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 5,684 recoveries and 70 fatalities. (PNA)
