MANILA – A barangay in Pasig added 100 more residents to the growing number of elderlies who will soon be enjoying privileges given to senior citizens, including the recent PHP1,000 midyear cash gift.

Barangay San Antonio now has a total of 819 senior citizen beneficiaries of the midyear cash gift program.

Chairman Raymond Lising, in a news release on Thursday, said the cash gifts are being delivered by barangay personnel to the homes of senior residents for their safety and convenience.

“We are delivering the cash gifts of our seniors to their homes in order to protect them from Covid-19. We want to ensure that they are safe and in the comfort of their homes,” he said.

He said they started distributing the cash gift last June 16, adding that barangay workers have doled out the cash gifts to 90 percent of beneficiaries.

Lising said they want their senior citizens to feel that they are valued, appreciated, and loved in their barangay.

“The main objective of this is to give assistance to our seniors in our own little way. Naging maganda lang ang timing (The timing was good) now because of the pandemic kaya parang naging dagdag ayuda na din sa kanila lalo na pandagdag sa pambili ng gamot (it became an additional cash aid for them, especially for buying medicines),” he said.

Lising vowed to continue all programs for senior citizens in their barangay.

“The barangay will continue to be of service to our seniors amid the pandemic. In our own little way, ipagpapatuloy natin ipamalas ang ating pagmamahal at pag-aruga sa ating mga lolo at lola sa BSA (we will continue loving and taking care of our grandpas and grandmas),” he said.

In December last year, the barangay also opted to give PHP500 cash gifts to over 700 senior citizens in lieu of a Christmas party in accordance with the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) directive banning mass gatherings to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Barangay San Antonio, in June 2020, also distributed PHP1,000 midyear cash gifts to senior residents or those aged 60 and above.

Every August, the village gives nonagenarian residents of the barangay PHP5,000, which is on top of the PHP1,000 midyear cash gift. (PR)
