MANILA – Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David was elected as the new president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
The CBCP news website reported that the 62-year-old prelate was chosen for the position on Thursday, the first day of the two-day online plenary assembly of the bishops.
David will succeed outgoing president Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles.
David has been serving as CBCP vice president since December 2017. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Fernando in 1983.
In 2006, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the same archdiocese, a post he served for around 14 years until he was transferred to the Caloocan diocese in January 2016.
Meanwhile, Pasig Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara was elected as the new vice president of the CBCP.
The 58-year-old bishop was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Manila in 1990.
Vergara was appointed bishop of San Jose in Nueva Ecija in 2005 and as Pasig bishop in 2011.
The newly elected officials will officially assume their positions on December 1 and will serve a two-year term.
The conference meets in plenary sessions every January and July. (PNA)
