MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday called on anew deactivated voters to re-activate their registration to participate in next year's national and local elections.
Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said their efforts to encourage would-be voters also include those who have been delisted from the voters' list for failure to participate in two consecutive polls in the country.
“When we put out a call for registration, that includes an invitation to those deactivated by reason of failure to vote in the past 2 elections,” he said in a virtual presser.
He, however, admitted that some not all of the seven million deactivated voters will register again.
“But just to manage expectations, not all of the seven million are going to reactivate. The reason for that is because some of them moved to a different place, some moved overseas, some no longer interested in voting,” he said.
Jimenez added that they will step up the campaign to encourage more voters with less than three months left before the voter registration deadline on September 30.
“Yes, we will call out to them, as we have been doing so. Perhaps, with two months and a half left, we might step up the campaign for them to reactivate. But our expectation is, we will not get all seven million back,” he added.
Earlier, Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said 600,000 deactivated voters have registered again for the next polls.
The Comelec said the number of new voters is now at over 4.3 million, surpassing its target of four million. (PNA)
