MANILA – The Philippine women's volleyball team is expected to breeze through Group A of the Asian Seniors Women's Volleyball Championship to be held in various cities in Central Luzon on August 29 to September 4.

Following the group draw on Friday at the Asian Volleyball Confederation office in Bangkok, Thailand, the Philippines was drawn alongside Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan in Group A, seen as a "light" group.

Group B consists of Thailand, South Korea, Iran, and Australia.

The Philippines is eyeing a Final Four finish in this year's edition slated in the cities of Olongapo in Zambales, and Angeles and San Fernando in Pampanga.

A new champion will be crowned as Japan, winner of the last two editions in Biñan, Laguna and Seoul, did not join, mainly due to coronavirus disease 2019 concerns.

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) thanked the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases for approving its request to hold the tournament.

“We would like to thank the IATF and Malacañang for approving our request,” PNVF president Ramon Suzara said.

The Philippine team is currently in bubble training in Laoag, Ilocos Norte. (PNA)
