BACOLOD CITY – The Negros Occidental provincial government will roll out the Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) single-dose Janssen coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines in the local government units across the province from July 26-30.

A report released by Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II confirmed that the province received 14,000 vials or 70,000 doses of J&J jab from the national government on Monday.

Each vial of the J&J jab contains five doses.

The vaccines will be administered mainly for the A2 to A3 priority sectors, or the senior citizens, and adults with comorbidities, respectively, the report added.

On Monday, Negros Occidental also received the first shipment of 290 vials or 2,900 doses of AstraZeneca jabs it purchased through a multi-lateral agreement with the national government and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals Philippines Inc.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, however, expressed disappointment over the limited arrival of AstraZeneca vaccines ordered by the province.

“Only very little arrived. We ordered for 100,000 doses…It’s very disappointing, we were even expecting that what we ordered from AstraZeneca will be the first vaccines that will arrive here,” he added.

Based on Diaz’s report, the province still has a supply of 10,000 doses of AstraZeneca intended for 5,000 individuals, which is part of the allocation it received from the national government recently.

These will be rolled out on July 21 to 24 for the A2 vaccinees.

Lacson said the province will expedite its vaccination program with the threat of the Covid-19 Delta variant, which is considered as more transmissible and more infectious.

“We will roll out as fast as we can the vaccines that we received because experts tell us that vaccines will help fight Covid-19,” he said.

Negros Occidental earlier also received CoronaVac’s Sinovac jabs, and the US-made Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, the latter as part of the supply received by the national government through the COVAX Facility.

The Pfizer jabs, which totaled 11,700 doses, were administered from June 28-July 4. (PNA)
