LAOAG CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Sunday said the Manila North Road in Sitio Banquero, Barangay Pancian, Pagudpud town in Ilocos Norte is being cleared after a major landslide stranded several motorists in the area.
In an advisory, the DPWH Regional Office 1 reported that its maintenance crew is also closely monitoring the area as more possible landslides and flashflood may pose hazards amid the moderate to occasionally heavy rains being continuously experienced in the municipality.
Jocelyn Oamar, spokesperson of DPWH-1, said they have prepositioned their heavy equipment and personnel in case of any untoward incident.
Amid the intermittent rainfall brought about by the southwest monsoon, residents of Ilocos Norte were advised to take extra precautions when on the road.
In Ilocos Sur, only one lane of the Manila North Road Junction-Santiago-Banayoyo-Lidlidda-San Emilio-Quirino Road is passable due to major slides on some portions.
"Warning devices and signs were already installed while the DPWH crew conducts road clearing operation," Oamar said.
In its latest rainfall advisory on Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said parts of Ilocos Region may continue to experience moderate to heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
Residents near rivers and in low-lying and mountainous areas were advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslide. (PNA)
