MANILA – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday afternoon said there is no tsunami threat from the magnitude 8.2 earthquake recorded in the Alaska peninsula.

Based on Phivolcs' tsunami advisory issued at 4:17 p.m., no action is required as no destructive tsunami threat exists.

Earlier at 3:37 p.m., Phivolcs said "no evacuation is in order", but have advised a number of provinces to monitor updates.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours," Philvolcs said earlier.

According to reports, tsunami warning has been issued on parts of Alaska after the strong earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 8.2 quake hit 56 miles (91 kilometers) east southeast of Perryville, Alaska. (PNA
