Palace congratulates Math, Chemistry Olympiad winners

MANILA – Malacañang on Monday congratulated Filipinos who bagged medals at the recent Math and Chemistry Olympiads hosted by Russia and Japan, respectively.

The Philippines’ representatives won four silver and two bronze medals at the 62nd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) from July 14 to 24 virtually hosted by Russia.

“Binabati natin ang Team Philippines sa kanilang four silver medals at two bronze medals sa katatapos na (We congratulate Team Philippines for their four silver medals and two bronze medals in the recent) 62nd International Mathematical Olympiad hosted by Russia,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a Palace press briefing.

Bagging silver medals for the Philippines this year are Bryce Ainsley Sanchez of Grace Christian College, Steven Reyes of Saint Jude Catholic School, Immanuel Josiah Balete of St. Stephen’s High School, and Raphael Dylan Dalida of Philippine Science High School (PSHS).

Sarji Elijah Bona of De La Salle University Senior High School and Vincent Dela Cruz of Valenzuela School of Mathematics and Science both won bronze medals.

The country’s representatives also secured two silver medals and one bronze medal at the 53rd International Chemistry Olympiad (ICh0) virtually held from July 25 to Aug. 2 in Japan.

“Binabati rin natin ang Team Philippines na nag-uwi ng dalawang silver medals at isang bronze medal sa katatapos na (We also congratulate Team Philippines for bringing home two silver medals and one bronze medal in the recent) 53rd International Chemistry Olympiad hosted by Japan,” he added.

Angelo Gelacio of the PSHS-Main Campus and Nathan Wayne Ariston of the PSHS-Central Mindanao Campus both clinched silver medals at the competition.

Aames Juriel Morales of De La Salle University (DLSU) Integrated School Senior High School (SHS) Manila won a bronze medal.

“Patunay ang mga ito sa galing at talino ng estudyanteng Pilipino (This is proof of the Filipino student’s talent and intelligence),” Roque said.

Meanwhile, Roque also wished luck to six differently-abled national athletes who will compete in the Tokyo Paralympics from Aug. 24 to Sept. 5.

The Philippine Team is composed of Ernie Gawilan and Gary Bejino (para swimming), Allain Ganapin (para taekwondo), Jeanette Aceveda and Jerrold Mangliwan (para athletics) and Achelle Guion (para powerlifting).

“Good luck po sa Team Philippines na sasali sa 2020 Paralympics na magsisimula next week (Good luck to Team Philippines competing in the 2020 Paralympics starting next week), Aug. 24 in Tokyo, Japan. Go for gold!” he said.

This year’s Paralympics will feature 540 events in 22 sports with the Philippines competing in only four disciplines. (PNA)
