TACLOBAN CITY – Fierce winds brought by Typhoon Jolina caused widespread power outages in Eastern Visayas affecting 286,243 power consumers, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported Tuesday.

At least five transmission lines failed to function causing blackouts in Tacloban City and nearby towns, the entire Samar province, and all towns in Eastern Samar.

The lights went out late Monday in some parts of Leyte and Eastern Samar while Samar areas experienced power outages before dawn on Tuesday.

Troubled transmission lines include Paranas-Borongan-Quinapondan 69kV line, Sta. Rita-Quinapondan 69kV line, Babatngon-Arado 69kV line, Paranas-Bliss 69kV line, Calbayog-Bliss 69kV line.

“Inspection and restoration of lines in the affected areas will be in full swing as soon as the weather allows,” the NGCP said in its regular update sent to reporters.

The power interruption has affected at least 286,243 power consumers, both households and establishments, being served by five electric cooperatives.

Typhoon Jolina unleashed its wrath Monday night when it crossed Samar Island. It made its first landfall in Hernani, Eastern Samar.

As of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, the typhoon was spotted moving west-northwestward over Samar Sea to Masbate.

The center of the eye of the typhoon was estimated based on all available data over the coastal waters of Almagro, Samar.

It has maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometer per hour (kph) near the center, gustiness of up to 150 kph. (PNA)
