MANILA – The Schools Division Office (SDO) of Manila on Wednesday suspended classes due to bad weather in the National Capital Region (NCR) caused by Severe Tropical Storm Jolina.
“Due to inclement weather brought about by Tropical Storm Jolina and as (the weather bureau) PAGASA raised Tropical Storm Signal No. 2 in Metro Manila, classes in all private elementary and secondary schools in the City of Manila is hereby suspended today, Sept. 8, 2021 (Wednesday),” SDO Manila Superintendent, Dr. Magdalena Lim, said in an advisory.
Lim advised students and parents to take safety precautions amid the weather disturbance.
Meanwhile, the two universities under the city government said they were monitoring developments on the weather conditions.
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) President, Dr. Emmanuel Leyco, said most of their faculty and students are working online and that only 20 percent of the university’s staff are deployed on-site.
Leyco said those who are required to physically report for work facilitate critical and essential services due to the continuous implementation of the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in Metro Manila.
"We will issue periodic updates throughout the day as we monitor the weather, Internet connectivity, and power stability," he said in an advisory.
Universidad de Manila (UDM) President Felma Carlos-Tria, meanwhile, said they are practicing flexibility in the university and assured that the same will be observed on Wednesday.
“Those who are able to attend synchronous classes may do so, while those who cannot will be excused,” Carlos-Tria said.
She added that the university observes a limited deployment for faculty and staff amid the MECQ in Metro Manila and advised them to monitor announcements as they would be issuing regular updates during the day. (PNA)
