ZAMBOANGA CITY – Zamboanga del Sur's coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccination drive got a big boost after it received 10,000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine from the national government.

Zamboanga del Sur Gov. Victor Yu received the shipment of the Chinese-made jabs that arrived at around 7 a.m. Thursday at the Pagadian City Airport from Manila.

The vaccines were immediately transported to the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) in Barangay Dao, Pagadian City, the province’s capital.

Yu said the IPHO will distribute the vaccines to the Rural Health Units “so they can continue the vaccination rollout in their respective areas of responsibility.”

Yu said that the vaccines were allocated as a special gift to the province in line with the celebration of the 69th founding anniversary of the province on Friday.

He thanked Senator Christopher Lawrence Go and vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. for the vaccines, saying this will help in addressing the surge in infections currently experienced by the province.

He said Friday's celebration will emphasize the importance of vaccination in line with the celebration’s theme: “Sa Paglipad ng Zamboanga del Sur, Bida ang Bakunadong Zambosurians.”

Latest Department of Health-Region 9 data showed that Zamboanga del Sur has 9,187 total confirmed cases of Covid-19, with 6,139 recoveries, 2,779 active cases and 269 deaths as of Sept. 13. (PNA)
