ZAMBOANGA CITY – The city government here has released cash incentive to a centenarian in recognition of her contribution to society.

The recipient is 100-year-old Angelina Santos from Barangay Cabatangan.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar was assisted by Councilor Josephine Pareja in handing over the amount to Santos on Thursday.

The grant of the incentives is provided under City Ordinance 459 as amended by Ordinance 539, otherwise known as the Octogenarian and Nonagenarian Benefits for Senior Citizens of Zamboanga City.

Under the ordinance, a centenarian will receive PHP50,000 as cash incentive, which is the city government's counterpart to the incentives granted by the national government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) based on Republic Act 10868 as a way of honoring and recognizing the contributions of senior citizens to the society.

Salazar said Santos received PHP30,000, after being given PHP20,000 on July 8 by virtue of Ordinance 539.

Santos turned 100 years old last Aug. 1 and is expected to receive PHP100,000 from the DSWD.

The grant of the incentives is facilitated by the City Social Welfare and Development and the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs. (PNA)
