DAVAO CITY – Mayor Sara Z. Duterte confirmed on Friday that she would seek re-election as mayor in this city next year.

Duterte confirmed the news following the interview of Liloan Mayor Christina Frasco, her spokesperson on Thursday.

“What I am sure of is that, whatever Mayor Frasco said, I can confirm that,” Duterte said in an interview.

She also confirmed that Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte, will also seek reelection in the 2022 polls.

“As agreed between party members, Vice-Mayor Baste will be the overall organizing person for the joint campaign of Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) and Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod (HTL),” the mayor added.

On Wednesday, the presidential daughter urged the Filipino people to extend their “strongest support” to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s vice presidential bid in the 2022 elections.

This, as Sara reiterated that she will not run for President after her father formally accepted his nomination as the official vice-presidential candidate of the ruling party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), to ensure the “continuity” of his efforts to bring progress to the country.

“We have a good agreement with President Duterte in our respective political careers. Let us give him our strongest support for his decision to run for Vice President,” Mayor Sara said in a video message posted on her official Facebook Page.

However, supporters of Mayor Sara renewed their call for her to seek the presidency in the 2022 polls as they humbly asked President Duterte to scrap his decision to run for vice president.

“We humbly asked President Digong to withdraw and give Mayor Sara a chance to lead the country. I think it is time for Tatay Digong to rest and leave the leadership to her daughter,” Braulio E. Dujali Mayor Leah Marie Moral-Romano told Philippine News Agency in an interview Wednesday.

On the other hand, Sara All Philippines 2022 group also appealed to the President not to pursue running for vice president.

“At this critical juncture in our country's history, we need to choose the next generation of leaders. And we just want your daughter, Mayor Sara, to become our national leader like you. We admire and appreciate both of you saying only one Duterte can run in the forthcoming elections,” the group said in a statement dated Sept. 15.

On Friday, Duterte visited the Bakuna by the Sea vaccination site, located outside a hotel that gives a resort-like ambiance, with Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.

Ricardo Padayhag, a person with a disability, was grateful for finally getting his first dose of the Sinovac Covid-19 jab.

“I will see to it that I will be vaccinated to be protected from the virus and I want to make sure that my family will be safe as well,” he told the Philippine News Agency. (PNA)
