MANILA – There are now a total of 42 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) trains on food safety, according to the DOST in Caraga region on Tuesday.

DOST-Caraga officer in charge, Andrea Cabonita, said these are beneficiaries of the agency's “Shop Floor Research & Development on Ensuring Food Safety Management of MSMEs”.

"(We will provide them with) end-product microbiological assessment; and also help them identify gaps in the food management system," Cabonita told the Philippine News Agency.

She added that technical interventions related to food safety, such as training on good manufacturing practices, will also be given.

Further, the DOST will assist these MSMEs on-site assessments, product reformulation, and layouts, among others.

Earlier, DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña said that through this project, a science-based approach will be applied to assess appropriate measures to recommend for the continuous improvement of MSMEs in terms of safe manufacturing of food.

Cabonita said this science-based approach includes ATP testing of food and non-food contact surfaces to determine hygiene and sanitation.

"Food samples will be subjected to microbiological analyses to assess its quality and compliance to standards. Information obtained through testing will be utilized as a baseline data for identifying gaps and appropriate food safety-related interventions," de la Peña also mentioned earlier.

Meanwhile, Cabonita said Phase 1 of this project will end by December.

"For Phase 2 that will start next year, appropriate interventions will be implemented. These interventions will be based on the results initial assessments of the MSMEs' food products and process," she said.
