DAVAO CITY - The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 11 (Davao Region) is now preparing to distribute emergency shelter assistance to the families in Davao del Sur who were affected by the series of earthquakes in 2019.

The strongest earthquake was the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Matanao town on December 15, 2019.

It is the fourth temblor above magnitude 6.0 which followed after the 6.3-magnitude on October 16, 6.6 on October 29, and 6.5 on October 31.

In a statement Wednesday, DSWD-11 said a total of 36,360 beneficiaries will avail of the cash assistance, wherein 6,930 owners of totally damaged houses will each receive cash assistance worth PHP30,000 or a total of PHP207.9 million.

The 29,430 owners of partially damaged houses will be receiving PHP10,000 each or a total of PHP293.4 million.

Currently, the department is in the social preparation stage, where it has been working with the local government units for the master list of beneficiaries and the necessary arrangements for the program implementation, considering the restrictions imposed due to the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Aside from the cash assistance, they will also be given temporary employment through the cash-for-work modality.

“The owners of totally damaged houses will be employed for 10 days, while those who had partially damaged houses will be employed for five days with a daily rate of PHP297.00,” the statement reads.

DSWD-11 intends to implement the program and finish the same before the end of the calendar year 2021. (PNA)
