MANILA – A total of 11,254,609 million Filipinos, residing in the National Capital Region (NCR) and seven provinces, have completed the Step 2 application process for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) project as of October 5.

In an advisory released Tuesday, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said NCR-Camanava (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela) and seven provinces each surpassed the one-million mark in the biometrics registration.

So far, NCR-CAMANAVA has 1,176,053 registrants; Pangasinan, 1,253,686; Bulacan, 1,046,965; Pampanga, 1,014,382; Iloilo, 1,218,166; Negros Occidental, 1,647,906; Cebu, 2,554,237; and Leyte, 1,343,214.

National Statistician and PSA Undersecretary Dennis Mapa said the latest development signified the success of the government's goal to provide financial inclusion to all Filipinos through the PhilSys project.

"We extend our congratulations and deepest thanks to the PSA field offices and local government units of these cities and provinces for their dedication and commitment to register their constituents with PhilSys," Mapa said in a statement.

"We expect more cities and provinces to join the roster in the coming weeks. Our field offices are working hard in promoting PhilSys registration while maintaining strict adherence to health and safety protocols,” he said.

He said Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Rizal, and Camarines Sur have almost one million applicants.

The second phase of the PhilSys registration involves validation of supporting documents and collecting biometrics (iris scans, fingerprints, and front-facing photographs).

The PSA has also partnered with malls, other government line agencies, and private companies to expand and expedite the registration in convenient and accessible locations.

The Step 1 process can be accomplished via https://register.philsys.gov.ph.

The Philippine Postal Corporation will deliver the Philippine Identification (PhilID) cards.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrolment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present the PhilID during transactions. (PNA)
