19 confirmed dead in 'Maring' onslaught: NDRRMC

MANILA – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has confirmed that 19 people were killed due to the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Maring.

In an update on Thursday, the agency said it is also validating reports of an additional 11 deaths.

The confirmed fatalities include 14 from Ilocos Sur; one from Pangasinan; and four from Palawan.

Meanwhile, the 11 reported deaths still undergoing validation include two from Cagayan and nine from Benguet.

Most of the deaths are attributed to drowning and landslides. Meanwhile, still undergoing confirmation are reports of three injured in Benguet.

The number of confirmed missing persons is placed at 13 -- one from Ilocos Norte; three from Ilocos Sur; one in Pangasinan; three in La Union; and five in Palawan.

Also undergoing validation is a report of one missing in Benguet.

So far, the storm has affected 673 villages in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Caraga, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Affected families are estimated at 50,040 which is equivalent to 194,677 persons.

Of this number, 1,775 families or around 7,370 individuals are being aided in 124 evacuation centers while the remainder has either gone home or are being sheltered by families and friends.

Houses damaged were placed at 325 in Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Caraga, and the CAR.

Of this figure, 236 are classified as partially damaged while 89 were totally damaged.

Damage to agriculture was estimated at around PHP1.09 billion in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and CAR.

Meanwhile, infrastructure damage was estimated at PHP66.4 million in Cagayan Valley, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and CAR. (PNA)
