LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – Over 120 members of the Maniboc Fisherfolk Community in this town have received several fishing materials as early Christmas gifts from SM Pangasinan malls.

In an interview on Tuesday, Maniboc Fisherfolk Community president Jose Sison Jr. said the items will be of great help for their members.

Nagpapasalamat po kami sa SM, nakapakalaking tulong po nito sa amin. Naghihiraman lang din po kami ng net para sa kalukor. Ngayon ito na po mga gagamitin namin tapos paghahati-hatian namin yong huli (We are so grateful to SM for this is a huge help to us. We are just sharing a net for fishing. Now we have new nets to use and we will share the catch later on),” he said.

The group received on Monday eight fishing nets of different types, eight rolls of fishing rope about 200 meters each, and 10 night lamps with radio transistors costing about PHP50,000.

SM Center Dagupan mall manager Eileen delos Santos said the fishing nets were of different types which the group could use depending on the season they need to catch fish.

“From among the fisherfolk groups in the province, Maniboc Fisherfolk Community is the most marginalized since not all of them have fishing boats and own fishing nets,” she said in a separate interview.

Delos Santos said the project is under SM Supermalls’ 100 Ways of Caring to kick start the Christmas countdown.

“SM pledged to donate to over 10,000 beneficiaries all over the country, including communities in need, hardworking SM employees, medical front-liners, and dedicated delivery partners, among others,” she added. (PNA)
