MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday reminded delivery and courier service firms to carefully check the background of rider applicants.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar made the remarks after authorities arrested a delivery rider and seized from him around PHP3.4 million worth of shabu in Caloocan City last October 23.

“We remind delivery and courier service companies to carefully scan their delivery riders to ensure that their companies are not being used for illegal transactions and delivery of contraband,” Eleazar said in a statement.

The suspect identified as Arturo Del Cruz Jr., 38, a delivery rider and a resident of Navotas City, yielded some 500 grams of shabu, buy-bust money in a joint operation by the police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

“The PNP also reminds them to be alert to those who may use their service to deliver contraband, including illegal drugs, to immediately inform the authorities in case they learn about it so that we can take immediate action,” he added.

Eleazar has also ordered a further investigation on the suspect to determine the scope of his illegal drug activities.

“We will also find out who the supplier or group the suspect belongs to and where he will take large amounts of shabu. He is possibly one of the sources of drug supply in Metro Manila,” he added.

The suspect is now under the custody of PDEA while charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 are being readied against him. (PNA)
