TACLOBAN CITY – The virtual Eastern Visayas Regional Science and Technology Week is expected to draw 500 participants from different sectors as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) showcases world-class technologies.

Micro small and medium entrepreneurs, scientists and technologists, investors, academe, and industry representatives will join the series of fora, training, lectures, and virtual exhibits from November 22 to 28.

“Through this event, we will highlight the initiatives and accomplishments of DOST in Eastern Visayas together with our partner and stakeholders, in our quest of bringing science closer to the people,” said DOST regional director Ernesto Granada in a statement issued on Friday.

This is the second year that the DOST will hold the event virtually since large gatherings are still discouraged during this pandemic, according to Granada.

“Despite the distance, we are one in celebrating the triumphs of the scientific community and the fruits of the hard work of our Filipino scientists, researchers, innovators, and engineers,” Granada added.

Ramil Uy, DOST regional information officer said at least 20 technologies will be showcased in the week-long event. Various topics are also lined up in lectures.

“Some of these technologies are developed to provide solutions to the ongoing health crisis. We want to raise public awareness about these technologies,” Uy added.

High impact technologies and research and development projects are in the areas of health and nutrition, industry competitiveness, enterprise development, disaster management and risk reduction, education, and agriculture, among others.

Among these technologies are nutritional genomics of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, the Biosafety Level 2+ Laboratory for the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines, virgin coconut oil as adjunct therapy for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the Smart Water Infrastructure Management, among others.

The week-long activities are anchored on the theme “Agham at Teknolohiya: Tugon sa Hamon ng Panahon.” (PNA)
