MANILA – The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has scheduled the interview for applicants to the position of associate justice of the Supreme Court (SC).

There will be a vacancy next year when Associate Justice Rosmari Carandang reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70 on Jan. 9, 2022.

In an announcement dated November 19 and shared Monday, the JBC said the online interview on December 6 will be for Commission on Audit (COA) chairperson Michael Aguinaldo, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner and former Justice department undersecretary Antonio Kho Jr., and Court of Appeals (CA) Associate Justice Maria Filomena Singh.

Aguinaldo, appointed in 2015, will end his term with COA in February while Kho withdrew his previous application to the SC in August.

The JBC also named other applicants whose previous interviews are still valid from when they applied for an earlier vacancy in the SC.

They are Sandiganbayan presiding justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang, Sandiganbayan associate justice and former Cebu judge Geraldine Faith Econg, CA associate justices Apolinario Bruselas Jr., Ramon Cruz and Ronaldo B. Martin, Finance Undersecretary Antonette Tionko, and Deputy SC Administrator Raul Villanueva.

Villanueva was named Officer-in-Charge following the appointment of Jose Midas Marquez as associate justice to replace the retired Edgardo delos Santos. (PNA)
