LEGAZPI CITY – The Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5) on Sunday said the celebration of Christmas has been generally peaceful in the entire Bicol Region, with no "unusual" or major untoward incidents reported.

In a statement, PRO-5 said this was the result of extensive efforts undertaken by the police force to ensure that the community would celebrate a joyous Christmas.

Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo, PRO-5 regional director, said these efforts included the deployment of Philippine National Police personnel to churches in anticipation of the influx of people attending holy masses.

Authorities also intensified their police and mobile visibility patrol in terminals to assist passengers heading home to their respective places and other areas for their Christmas break.

PRO-5 also stayed on full alert status to ensure swift and prompt response to calls for assistance. It earlier established the Reactionary Standby-Support Force-"Ligtas Paskuhan" program to be able to render law enforcement duties efficiently.

Estomo said the police needs to exert extra effort during the Yuletide season to secure the people and allow them a peaceful celebration of the holidays.

"It is for this reason that we do not rest on our laurels but stay persistent in doing our job. We also thank the public for their cooperation that made it possible for us to better deliver our services," he said. (PNA)
