TACLOBAN CITY - The National Housing Authority (NHA) has turned over PHP57.5 million emergency housing assistance to the provincial governments of Southern Leyte and Leyte to help victims of Typhoon Odette rebuild their homes.
In a statement on Tuesday, the NHA regional office here said at least PHP5,000 will be given to each of the identified families whose houses were damaged.
Local governments take charge of the distribution of shelter aid to qualified beneficiaries, giving priority to those badly-affected.
"The amount will be provided for each qualified beneficiary-family under this special program as a grant to augment in rebuilding their houses, regardless of the extent of damage sustained," the NHA said.
NHA Eastern Visayas regional manager Ericson Delloro led the ceremonial turnover of PHP45 million check to Southern Leyte Governor Damian Mercado on December 30.
The following day, the NHA turned over the PHP12.5 million shelter aid to Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla.
At least 120,797 houses were damaged by Typhoon Odette when it unleashed its wrath in Southern Leyte on December 16, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said in its preliminary report.
All the 18 towns in Southern Leyte and Maasin City, the regional capital, were devastated.
In Leyte, the most affected areas are Dulag, Hilongos, Hindang, Matalom, Bato, Inopacan, Abuyog, and Mahaplag. (PNA)
