MANILA – Another police officer has succumbed to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Wednesday.

In a message to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), PNP deputy chief for administration, Lt. Gen. Joselito Vera Cruz, said the police force's 126th Covid-19 fatality was a staff sergeant assigned to the Jaen municipal police in Nueva Ecija.

The 38-year-old patient, who was fully vaccinated, died at the Nueva Ecija Medical Center on January 14 due to Covid-19 and acute respiratory failure.

This is the PNP's first death from Covid-19 since November 9 last year.

“(He was) vaccinated but with co-morbidities,” Vera Cruz said.

The patient tested positive for Covid-19 on January 13 and has been under medical care to manage his co-morbidity.

His medical records further showed that he had an acute respiratory failure secondary to community-acquired pneumonia and chronic kidney disease.

The PNP sent its condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased police officer and assured death benefits and assistance to the orphaned kin.

In its latest Covid-19 bulletin, the PNP Health Service reported 503 new recoveries, raising the recovery count to 42,550 out of 46,291 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.

Despite logging 323 new cases, the active case tally slightly decreased to 3,615 from Tuesday's 3,796.

Marami sa mga nag-positive sa amin are asymptomatic to mild cases. This may be attributed to the fact that mataas ang bilang ng mga fully vaccinated sa aming hanay (Many of those who tested positive for Covid-19 in our ranks are asymptomatic to mild cases. This may be attributed to the high number of fully vaccinated in our ranks),” Vera Cruz said.

He said with the latest Department of Health guidelines on the shortened period of isolation, especially for those fully vaccinated, recovery would be faster.

He noted that isolation facilities in Camp Crame have been decongested.

Based on the latest PNP data, 217,034 (96.33 percent) out of a total of 225,314 personnel have been fully vaccinated, while 7,173 (3.18 percent) are waiting for their second dose.

About 1,107 PNP personnel (0.53 percent) have yet to receive the vaccine. (PNA)
